The Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine at Kagoshima University in Japan conducted a study consisting of 44 women who had fibromyalgia symptoms. Three days a week, the participants took daily sauna sessions combined with workouts in the water twice a week. Researchers reported that the combination of sauna therapy and water exercises improved participants' quality and symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Some critics have improperly indicated that the sauna can potentially be too stressful on the heart, but, according to Finland's UKK Institute for Health Promotion Research, responsible sauna use is highly unlikely to cause heart problems. In fact, research orchestrated by the Center for Cardiovascular and Prevention at the University of Québec in Montreal found that exercise and the sauna provide an improvement in symptoms for people with hypertension. A word of warning, however, it is recommended first not to abruptly change the temperatures from the heat of the sauna to the cold outside, because it can increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias.

A New Zealand study of distance running athletes found that the sauna increased running time by as much as 32%. Furthermore, plasma and red cell volumes after the sauna increased by 7.1% and 3.5%. The researchers concluded that the increased blood volume was likely the reason for the significant performance improvement.
4. Can reduce common cold problems
The University of Austria designed an experiment to determine whether sauna use prevents the development of the common cold. Over a 6-month period, a group that included 50 people in total split two ways: 25 people used a sauna, and 25 did not. At the end of the study, it was observed that the group that used the sauna had much less incidence of the common cold than the other group, the researchers concluded that the regular use of the sauna can reduce the incidence of common colds.

Research has repeatedly shown that sweating in a sauna can help detoxify the body of toxic agents, such as lactic acid, sodium, and uric acid, that routinely accumulate in the body. Toxins stored in subcutaneous fat are released through perspiration.
